Co-curricular Opportunities

Sixth Form life is not just about specifications and the pursuit of results. Our desire is to produce well rounded individuals, who are flexible in thought, responsible and adaptable. At BMS there are a huge range of co-curricular activities and more importantly we encourage you to set up new activities, recent initiatives have included the ultimate frisbee club and the equestrian society.

Of course our reputation in the performing arts and sport mean that there are plenty of opportunities to get involved, but as a Sixth Former you will often find plenty of opportunities to take a leadership role within our house system.

The House System

BMS has an exceptionally active House system with plenty of opportunities to get involved in leading events and working with younger members of the school community. House events include the bi-annual House Music and Drama competitions, the annual sports competitions that includes both the major sports - hockey, netball, football & rugby as well as the minor sports, table tennis, snooker etc.

Curriculum Enrichment

We recognise that not everyone can take advantage of all these opportunities and that is why we also offer various opportunities from within the curriculum. In Y12 students spend one period per cycle dedicated to academic enrichment covering study skills, learning styles, social responsibilities and plenty of time on University applications.

In Y13 students have a double period a cycle of activities. In this session we offer opportunities for students to undertake Community Service through helping at our drop in centre for the elderly, or going out to care homes. Other highlights include our sail and adventure programme which takes students out on the water or up on the high ropes, as well as individual coaching sessions in specific sports or our culture vulture experiences in English Literature.

Academic Enrichment

We run an active Oxbridge programme to stretch those who are considering applying to the Russell Group universities. In addition departments run various opportunities for Gifted and Talented students from the Creative Writing cricle in English, through to the Maths Olympiad and Advanced Extension Awards (AEAs) which are qualifications set at a level in between A level and degree level.
